Zanzibar’s 61st Revolution Anniversary: Major Achievements Highlighted by President Mwinyi
President Hussein Mwinyi proudly reflected on Zanzibar’s significant gains during the 61st anniversary of the revolution, celebrated on January 11, 2025, in Gombani, Pemba. In his address, he emphasized the themes of peace, unity, and economic growth that have defined the past years.
The president noted the vital developments in infrastructure, increased investments, and enhanced business growth, along with marked improvements in social services and a commitment to democracy and good governance. He attributed these successes to the foundational efforts stemming from the 1964 Glorious Revolution, acknowledging the contributions of both the people and leaders from previous administrations.
Over the past four years, the eighth government has focused on advancing development in various sectors while ensuring the principles of peace, patriotism, and national unity are upheld. President Mwinyi reported a substantial economic growth rate of 7.5 percent as of September 2024, with Zanzibar’s GDP rising from 4.78 trillion shillings in 2021 to 6.04 trillion shillings in 2023, a remarkable increase of 26 percent.
The services sector has been the primary engine of this economic expansion, achieving an average growth of 9.9 percent in 2023, up from 1.3 percent in 2021. The tourism industry alone witnessed a 145 percent increase in visitor numbers, from 568,312 in November 2023 to 645,144 in November 2024. Concurrently, government revenue collections surged by 51 percent, highlighting the financial resurgence in Zanzibar.
In terms of investments, the Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority reported 449 registered projects valued at $5.9 billion, projecting the creation of over 22,966 jobs across sectors such as hospitality, business, manufacturing, agriculture, and sports. Additionally, investments into blue economy sectors have gained momentum, with 17 islands hosting projects totaling $377.5 million.
President Mwinyi’s achievements also touched on the fisheries sector, noting a substantial 107.2 percent increase in fish production from 38,107 tons in 2020 to 78,943 tons in 2024, with plans to further support local fishermen.
Significant advancements in transport and logistics include a new partnership aimed at enhancing Malindi Port operations, which is essential for improving maritime efficiency.
In addressing the energy sector, the cost of electricity connections has seen a drastic reduction, allowing for the connection of over 115,000 new customers. The education sector also witnessed a transformation with the establishment of modern schools and an increased budget aimed at hiring thousands of new teachers to address shortages, particularly in science.
Healthcare improvements were underscored by the construction of modern hospitals and health centers, asserting the government’s dedication to enhancing health services comprehensively.
Reflecting on the political landscape, President Mwinyi discussed the progress made in addressing Union issues since 2006 and asserted the importance of unity as the nation gears up for the upcoming general elections. He called on citizens to maintain peace and cooperation during this vital democratic process.
