WASHINGTON – A global network has issued a stark warning regarding potential “real-world harm” if Meta proceeds with its decision to eliminate fact-checking on its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. This announcement came as CEO Mark Zuckerberg claimed that existing moderation practices are excessively censorious and politically biased.
Zuckerberg’s statement has raised concerns in various countries, notably Australia and Brazil, regarding the implications of reduced content moderation.
In response to Zuckerberg’s claims, the International Fact-Checking Network has assured the public that such allegations of censorship are unfounded. The network emphasized the importance of accurate information in preventing misinformation-driven consequences such as political turmoil, election interference, mob violence, and even genocide.
“If Meta chooses to extend this policy shift globally, it could lead to severe repercussions in numerous regions,” the network stated.
Facebook currently collaborates with approximately 80 fact-checking organizations worldwide, utilizing their services across its platforms.
The network further highlighted that Meta’s potential discontinuation of global fact-checking would likely exacerbate the spread of misinformation, resulting in damaging outcomes.
Zuckerberg’s Strategy
Coinciding with a significant political transition in the US, Meta’s policy changes appear to align with the Republican Party’s perspectives. The tech giant has faced criticism from political figures regarding perceived bias against their viewpoints.
Concerns have emerged from various factions, including Australia, which described Meta’s decision as a “very damaging development,” while Brazil labeled it “bad for democracy.”
The foray into fact-checking by Meta followed the unexpected election of Donald Trump in 2016, amidst widespread accusations that misinformation on social media played a pivotal role in this outcome.
