Police in Austria are ramping up security measures ahead of three highly anticipated Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna this week, scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. This significant increase in security comes in response to the arrests of two individuals suspected of planning Islamist attacks at large events in the vicinity, including the concerts.
Franz Ruf, the General Director for Public Security, confirmed the arrest of a 19-year-old Austrian in Ternitz, Lower Austria, on Wednesday morning. A second suspect was apprehended in Vienna later that day, with additional details remaining undisclosed.
Ruf stated that the investigation revealed both suspects had become radicalized through online platforms, with the arrested 19-year-old allegedly pledging allegiance to ISIS at the start of July. A thorough police operation occurred in Ternitz, involving the evacuation of nearby residences as authorities searched the suspect’s home. During this operation, some chemical substances were discovered and are currently undergoing analysis.
Authorities are committed to ensuring the safety of all events in Vienna, particularly the Taylor Swift performances at Ernst-Happel Stadium. Enhanced security checks will be implemented at concert entries, addressing the expected attendance of 65,000 concertgoers each day, alongside an additional 22,000 fans expected to gather outside the venue.
Vienna’s police chief, Gerhard Pürstl, mentioned that while the immediate threat has been reduced, an “abstract danger” persists. Special forces, police dog units, and anti-terrorism squads will be deployed around the stadium to bolster safety measures. Concert attendees are advised to expect delays upon entry and are encouraged to arrive early to ensure a smooth experience.
Ongoing investigations are being conducted as authorities work to maintain public safety during these major events.
