Regional Justice Center, the powerviolence band led by Ian Shelton, is making waves with significant changes and the announcement of a new album, Freedom, Sweet Freedom, set to release on September 20. Joining Shelton in this revamped lineup are his brother, Max Shelton, and Taylor Young, known for his work with various prominent bands. Two new tracks from the album, “Freedom” and “Take a Step Away,” showcase the collective talent of the group.
Ian Shelton founded Regional Justice Center in 2016 as a means to address his concerns about his brother’s incarceration and the broader implications of the prison industrial complex. Unlike past albums where Max contributed through recorded phone calls, Freedom, Sweet Freedom marks the first collaboration in which the Shelton brothers wrote, performed, and recorded together in person.
Max Shelton, who was released from prison in 2022, reflected on his past experiences, stating, “Eight years ago to the day, I woke up in county jail. I was confused and unsure of my future, but being able to reclaim those memories and transform them into something positive is a beautiful full circle moment. Even a lotus can grow in mud. Freedom, sweet freedom.”
Ian Shelton emphasized the integral role Max has played in the band since its inception, noting that the plan was always for Max to have a greater involvement upon his release. “Regional Justice Center has always been about Max’s story, and now he can share it with his own voice,” Ian stated.
This new album signifies not just a musical evolution but also a powerful personal journey for the Shelton brothers as they redefine their narrative together. Stay tuned for the release and the impact it’s sure to have on the hardcore scene.
