In a national display of respect, many businesses and services will be closed on Thursday in observance of the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. This day of mourning was officially recognized by President Joe Biden, who called for Americans to gather in their places of worship to pay tribute to the 39th U.S. president.
The U.S. Postal Service has announced a suspension of mail services and the closure of postal offices on this day. However, they will continue limited package deliveries to maintain operational efficiency.
Additionally, both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will shut down for trading, marking a significant occasion in U.S. history — the first such closure for a sitting president occurred in 1865 after Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. This tradition to honor deceased presidents continues, with the most recent market closure being for former President George H.W. Bush in 2018.
Federal agencies and executive departments will also observe this day of mourning, following an executive order signed by President Biden. While many offices will remain closed, those necessary for national security and public need will stay operational.
In line with these observances, the Supreme Court building will also be closed on Thursday, alongside various national monuments and parks managed by the National Park Service.
