Chad’s government has confirmed that the situation in the capital, N’Djamena, remains stable following reports of gunfire near the presidential palace.
Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah stated that there was a “minor incident,” assuring the public that “everything is calm.”
According to government sources, clashes occurred between security forces and “terrorist elements.” Koulamallah reported that 18 assailants and one security personnel lost their lives during the skirmish.
In the aftermath, tanks were deployed in the vicinity, and access to the palace was restricted. In a video message recorded within the palace grounds, Koulamallah was seen alongside government forces, emphasizing, “Nothing serious has happened.” He urged the public to remain calm and declared, “We are here and we will defend our country at the price of our blood. This entire attempt at destabilization has been thwarted.”
The minister revealed that the attack was carried out by a 24-member commando unit, with six attackers sustaining injuries. Additionally, three security personnel were also reported injured.
This unsettling incident took place shortly after a visit by China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, who met with President Mahamat Déby and other high-ranking officials.
