WASHINGTON — A man was arrested on Wednesday after attempting to bring a machete and several knives into the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, according to police reports.
Capitol police detected the machete during an X-ray screening of the bag, where they also discovered three knives concealed inside.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, faces charges for carrying a dangerous weapon.
Authorities temporarily suspended security screening on the north side of the visitor center but have since resumed regular operations.
This incident occurred as visitors were entering the Capitol to pay their respects to President Jimmy Carter, who is lying in state for a second consecutive day in the Capitol Rotunda.
President-elect Donald Trump is anticipated to visit the U.S. Capitol later on Wednesday, marking his first return since leaving office in 2021, to honor Carter before attending a meeting with Senate Republicans.
