The Baltimore Orioles, the franchise with which Matusz spent the majority of his career, expressed their condolences in a statement, reflecting on his significant impact during his time with the team. “Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the passing of former Oriole, Brian Matusz. He was beloved throughout Birdland, and his passion for baseball and our community was unmatched,” the statement read. They continued, “Brian dedicated his time to connecting with fans and was a cherished teammate, always exemplifying positivity.”

A native of Grand Junction, Colorado, Matusz attended St. Mary’s High School in Phoenix, Arizona. He was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2005 MLB draft but opted to pursue his education and athletic career at the University of San Diego instead. Matusz was later drafted by the Orioles as the fourth overall pick in the 2008 MLB draft, making his debut the following year.
Matusz’s last appearance in the MLB came in 2016. Afterward, he played in the minor leagues for the Arizona Diamondbacks, competed in the Mexican League with the Acereros de Monclova, and played for the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
Sports run in the Matusz family; his father, Michael, was a track-and-field athlete at Purdue University, and his brother, Chris, also pursued baseball at the collegiate level.
