Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command have successfully apprehended 50 suspects involved in the theft of streetlights, manhole covers, and various other items. This operation, conducted in collaboration with other security agencies, targeted known hotspots in Kabusa, Garki, Mabushi, and Wuse.
During the operation, a significant haul was recovered, including 25 manhole covers, five solar streetlights, and numerous streetlight poles, along with construction materials such as galvanized poles and high-voltage AEDC cables. Additionally, two locally made pistols were seized.
In a press conference held in Abuja, the Commissioner of Police detailed the recovery of 13 large solar panels, seven barrels of stolen diesel, and various tools commonly used for cutting iron. The suspects were also found with two live cartridges, a sharp knife, and a Volkswagen Sport bus that had been modified into a diesel tanker, among other items.
The Commissioner emphasized that the suspects are part of a well-organized network specializing in the vandalism of public installations for resale to scrap dealers. He remarked on the severity of their actions, stating, “The diversity and volume of recovered items underscore the organized nature of these groups whose activities significantly harm public infrastructure.”
He reiterated the commitment of the FCT Police Command and associated security agencies to maintain a zero-tolerance policy against vandalism and theft, ensuring the protection of public infrastructure and safety within the community.
