Cloudflare’s survey reveals insights into the world’s top websites across major categories

Google has retained its dominance as the world’s most popular internet service according to the latest Cloudflare report on internet trends and challenges, despite ongoing antitrust scrutiny. Google Chrome commands an impressive 65.7% of the global browser market, followed by Safari (15.4%), Edge (6.8%), Firefox (4%), and Samsung Internet (2.7%).
Following Google in popularity are Facebook, Apple, and TikTok, while Amazon has slipped to the 10th position compared to its previous ranking. Key highlights from the survey include:
TikTok remains resilient: The social media giant secures its place as the fourth most popular service overall and the second leading social media platform despite growing concerns about possible bans and regulations.
AI continues to be a hot topic: OpenAI solidifies its position as the most favored Generative AI service for the second consecutive year, followed by Character.AI, Codeium, QuillBot, and Claude.
Facebook holds strong: Again, Facebook outshines TikTok as the leading social media platform, with Instagram, X, and Snapchat completing the top five.
Video streaming remains robust: The leading three video streaming platforms remain unchanged, with YouTube on top, followed by Netflix and Twitch. Netflix continues to lead among paid streaming services, with Disney Plus and Amazon Prime Video following closely.
Global news services: In a surprising twist for English-speaking audiences, Globo, the Brazilian media conglomerate, ranks as the most popular news site worldwide, followed by BBC, The New York Times, CNN, Fox News, Google News, Yahoo Finance, Daily Mail, RT, and NewsBreak.
Increase in internet outages: Government-directed internet shutdowns have caused a surge in outages, totaling over 220 instances globally in 2024, up from 180 in 2023.
Starlink traffic experiences significant growth: Traffic to Starlink satellite internet services has nearly tripled this year, with Malawi experiencing the largest increase in usage since the service’s launch.
