Zanzibar’s Forodhani Makachu Diving Group Temporarily Suspended Amid Controversy
The Zanzibar Stone Town Conservation and Management Authority has announced a temporary suspension of the popular Forodhani Makachu diving group, igniting mixed reactions among local youth and stakeholders concerned about its impact on livelihoods and the tourism industry.
The authority stated that special contracts will be offered to individuals who agree to adhere to newly established guidelines, while non-compliance will result in exclusion from participation in this cultural experience.
In an official statement released on Sunday, the agency’s director general cited violations of rules and regulations as the primary reason for this suspension. Notably, incidents of inappropriate attire during performances, significant damage to local infrastructure, and comedic stunts involving rubbish bins were highlighted.
"The government recognizes the role of Makachu in fostering tourism," the statement declared. "We are conducting an investigation and those accountable for these infractions will face legal action."
Local youth engaged in the Makachu performances expressed concerns that the suspension could jeopardize their earnings. Many remain hopeful for a swift resolution. "It’s difficult, but we will be ready to return once the suspension is lifted," stated a participant known as Kibu.
Another member, Albaiya Mussa, noted the significance of the Makachu as a vital income source, reaffirming their commitment to comply with regulations upon resuming. "This game is our livelihood, and we understand the necessity of following the rules," Mussa added.
Reports from the youth indicate they met with authority officials who suggested a three-day suspension, with an expectation of returning shortly thereafter. However, Director General Ali Abubakar clarified that no definitive timeline could be established, as a new operational framework is in development.
"At this time, we are working on releasing a new procedure and will grant individual contracts to those seeking to return," Abubakar explained. "We will not allow a mass return; participation will be based on individual agreements."
Discussions surrounding the criteria for these contracts are ongoing, with key supporters of Makachu acknowledging the necessity of the suspension due to lapses in adherence to regulations.
A supporter expressed support for the action, stating, "While Makachu provides vital opportunities for youth, some individuals have drifted from the agreed rules." They emphasized the suspension as a chance for restructuring to address any misconduct.
Proponents are advocating for collaboration between the government and stakeholders to educate young people, set new guidelines, and enforce proper regulations to secure the integrity of this cultural activity.
