The Livestock Research and Information Centre at Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU) in Bidar has been honored with the National Breed Conservation Award 2024.
The award was presented during an event at the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources in Karnal, Haryana, a prominent institute under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. This recognition took place on National Farmers Day, with key personnel from KVAFSU accepting the award.
KVAFSU Vice-Chancellor K.C. Veeranna praised the teaching and non-teaching staff for this significant accomplishment, emphasizing that it highlights the dedication and expertise of the team in livestock research.
This achievement reinforces the center’s commitment to advancing innovations in livestock research and aims to enhance livestock quality across the region.
Mr. Rathod mentioned, “The Livestock Research and Information Centre is committed to the conservation and development of the Deoni breed, a dual-purpose cattle breed celebrated for its drought resilience, adaptability, and productivity in challenging conditions.” Established in 1970, the center spans 57 acres.
Recognized for its historical significance, the Deoni breed boasts over 300 years of lineage and is particularly beneficial for semi-intensive agricultural practices.
Mr. Rathod further highlighted that the center offers state-of-the-art housing facilities for Deoni cattle, supporting modern scientific livestock care. The center also manages around 30 acres dedicated to green fodder cultivation, ensuring optimal nutrition for the cattle.
In addition, the research facility features a fodder museum housing 35 varieties aimed at supporting local farmers. High-quality bull calves with superior genetics are regularly transferred to semen production stations in both Karnataka and Maharashtra.
To date, approximately 2.80 lakh frozen semen doses have been generated from these bulls, benefiting the local agricultural community. The center has auctioned over 300 animals in the past decade and continues to enhance its breeding stock by sourcing elite animals through an expert committee.
