PRACHIN BURI – In a significant development in the upcoming election, Napapat Anchasanichamon, a local provincial councillor and widow of a slain politician, has officially registered to run for the presidency of the Provincial Administration Organisation (PAO). This registration marks the first day of candidacy submissions.
Supported by the Pheu Thai Party, Ms. Napapat aims to claim the position of PAO chief amidst a backdrop of political turmoil following the recent death of her husband, Chaimet “Sor Jor Tong” Sitsanitphong. He was fatally shot on December 11 in an incident tied to an ongoing political dispute.
As of now, three other candidates have also filed their candidacy, while the faction of the incumbent PAO president Soonthorn Vilawan has not yet nominated anyone. The deadline for submissions is this Friday.
Initially hesitant about running due to safety concerns after her husband’s murder, Ms. Napapat’s decision to enter the race was influenced by her party’s support and encouragement from prominent political figures, including Thamanat Prompow.
“Khun Thaksin has called to give me his support,” said Ms. Napapat, expressing her determination to move forward and confidence in her campaign.
Chaimet’s tragic death, which involved multiple gunshot wounds, has stirred significant tension within the local political landscape. Reports indicate he had hoped for his wife’s candidacy, though Soonthorn had his own preferred candidate, fostering an atmosphere of rivalry as Soonthorn prepares for retirement at 85 years old.
The investigation into Chaimet’s murder has led to the arrest of Soonthorn and six aides, who remain in custody as authorities compile evidence. Recently, law enforcement conducted additional searches at the crime scene, with nearly 50 witnesses having been questioned thus far, indicating a thorough investigation.
