Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is gearing up for a crucial matchup against the Houston Texans this Saturday, despite dealing with a mildly sprained ankle. The two-time MVP was injured late in a 21-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns but remains determined to lead his team unless his condition prevents him from playing effectively.
Mahomes began treatment for his injury immediately after the game and dedicated over 12 hours to recovery at the practice facility on Monday, despite most of the team having a day off. He returned to the practice field Tuesday, with backup Carson Wentz ready to step in if needed.
“You don’t want to go out there and put yourself in harm’s way,” Mahomes commented. “But I want to be able to protect myself and execute the game plan effectively.”
The Chiefs are in a solid position, having already secured the AFC West title and a playoff berth. However, this final stretch against the Texans, Steelers on Christmas Day, and Broncos during the final weekend of the regular season is vital for maintaining their lead over the Buffalo Bills for the top playoff seed.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid stated, “Every game counts. If your guys can play, they play, as long as medically they’re fine to go.” While Mahomes is known for playing through pain, Reid trusts that he will be transparent regarding his condition throughout the week.
If Mahomes is unable to play, Wentz, who has nearly 100 games of NFL experience, stands ready to take over. He briefly showcased his capability against the Browns, completing both pass attempts for 20 yards as the Chiefs secured their victory.
Fans can catch the Kansas City Chiefs as they take on the Houston Texans this Saturday at 6 PM.
