MADISON, Wis. — Tragedy struck at Abundant Life Christian School in Wisconsin when a 15-year-old student opened fire in a study hall, resulting in the deaths of a teacher and a fellow student. This shocking incident prompted immediate police response after a second grader dialed 911.
Six others were wounded during the shooting on Monday, including two students reported to be in critical condition, according to Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes. The injured were swiftly transported to the hospital, with three receiving serious injuries, although two have since been released.
“Every child, every person in that building is a victim and will be a victim forever. We need to piece together what exactly happened,” Barnes stated.
The shooter, identified as Natalie Rupnow, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound upon police arrival and died on the way to the hospital. Barnes opted not to disclose additional information about the shooter, respecting the family’s privacy.
Abundant Life Christian School serves approximately 420 students from prekindergarten through high school. The school’s director of elementary and school relations noted that during safety drills, leaders typically announce the practice. However, on this day, students were alerted to an actual emergency when they heard ‘Lockdown, lockdown.’
“We do not have metal detectors but rely on other security measures, including cameras,” Wiers explained.
At this time, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and investigators are examining whether specific individuals were targeted, Barnes remarked.
Authorities are working closely with the shooter’s family to gather insights, as they search the home’s background for information pertinent to the investigation.
The initial 911 call came in shortly before 11 a.m., and first responders, who happened to be nearby for training, reached the school within three minutes of the report.
Investigators believe a 9mm pistol was used in the shooting. Local law enforcement was supported by federal agents on the scene, with no shots fired by police.
Parents and children were reunited at a nearby health clinic, with emotional scenes as families embraced after the terrifying ordeal.
In a public plea, Abundant Life urged for prayers and support, while the school administration deliberates whether to hold classes in the coming days.
In response to the incident, calls for stricter gun control measures have amplified. Leaders across the country are advocating for universal background checks and other safety regulations.
