Unguja, Zanzibar: The chairperson of the National Advisory Committee for the Gender Equality Platform (GEF) has called on the private sector to establish comprehensive databases of qualified female professionals to enhance recruitment, promotion, and placement into leadership roles.
During a national meeting with private sector leaders in Zanzibar on December 14, 2024, she emphasized that achieving gender equality is essential for both social justice and economic growth.
“I urge businesses and institutions to adopt gender-sensitive criteria for leadership, fostering inclusive workplaces,” she stated.
As an advisor to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, she also highlighted the importance of implementing policies that promote equal pay, flexible working hours, and a strict stance against harassment. The unique economic and social landscape of Zanzibar provides a significant opportunity to incorporate gender equality into its development agenda.
“This platform is a reminder that the private sector can lead significant changes in gender equality. Leaders need to take proactive steps as employers, investors, and innovators,” she added.
Furthermore, she acknowledged the need to address the challenges faced by men, stating, “It is crucial to create opportunities for both men and women to thrive in an inclusive environment. Our goal is to ensure no one is left behind.”
Supporting these sentiments, the Deputy Resident Representative of UN Women emphasized the private sector’s role in combating pay disparities, inequality, and gender-based violence. She noted the importance of businesses promoting women’s education, training, and professional development through inclusive procurement practices.
“As we progress, strengthening partnerships between the private sector, government, civil society, academia, and international organizations will enhance the sharing of resources and expertise, accelerating our efforts toward gender equality,” she remarked.
The Minister for Community Development, Gender, Elderly, and Children highlighted that gender equality is achievable with dedicated commitment, urging for equal opportunities for both girls and boys at home and beyond.
The Deputy Speaker of Zanzibar’s House of Representatives reinforced the importance of empowering women across all sectors, stating, “Each institution must ensure women have opportunities to lead and succeed, while policy barriers to progress must be addressed.”
According to the chief executive officer of Zanzibar National Chamber of Commerce, women constitute 40 percent of the chamber’s members, reflecting a rise in female entrepreneurship. However, he asserted that more needs to be done to create standards that attract women into business and leadership roles.
A representative from Jumbi Market called for enhanced training and guidance to overcome societal norms that hinder progress, stating that collaborative efforts are essential for community education on necessary changes.
Lastly, the director of Zanzibar Day Care addressed the need for equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities, insisting that institutions must include everyone based on their abilities.
