Tragedy struck Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district on Saturday as four children lost their lives when a wall collapsed on them near a private school, following relentless rainfall in the region, authorities reported.
The incident occurred in the afternoon while the students were making their way home from school in the Garh police station area. The wall belonged to an unmaintained building.
Mangawan Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) P. S. Tripathi confirmed that a total of eight individuals were trapped under the rubble, with four children unfortunately succumbing to their injuries. “One woman and three children are receiving medical care,” he stated.
The condition of the woman and one child remains critical, necessitating their transfer to Rewa’s Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, reported Rewa Additional Superintendent of Police Vivek Lal.
Law enforcement has initiated action, filing a case against the property owners — Ramesh Namdeo, 54, and Satish Namdeo, 30 — under multiple sections of the Bharat Nyay Sanhita (BNS). The suspects are currently in custody and being interrogated by authorities, as confirmed by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDOP) K. S. Dwivedi.
The victims have been identified as Manya Gupta, 7, Siddharth Gupta, 5, their cousin Anshika Gupta, 5, and Anuj Prajapati, 5.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed his condolences over the tragedy and announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh for each impacted family.
“I pray for the peace of the souls of the children we’ve lost and wish a swift recovery for those injured in this accident. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families who are grieving,” he stated.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Congress leader and former Chief Minister Kamal Nath commented on social media regarding the incident, emphasizing that the collapsing wall was connected to the children’s school. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss and wished for the recovery of the injured.
Additionally, on the same day, two children from another family lost their lives, and five others were injured when their house collapsed in Narsinghpur district.
Madhya Pradesh has been facing severe rainfall for over a week, leading to flood-like conditions in several districts and prompting the government to release water from multiple dams throughout the state.
