The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu for maintaining silence during the ongoing nationwide EndBadGovernance protests.
In light of severe economic challenges, countless Nigerians struggle to meet basic needs. Protests organized by the youth began on Thursday and have continued across major cities including Abuja, Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, and Rivers, with demands for an end to hunger and ineffective governance.
In a statement issued over the weekend, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary called on President Tinubu to speak out promptly and address the pressing issues confronting citizens.
The statement emphasized the need for immediate action, urging, “President Tinubu must address Nigerians to outline urgent measures to lower the price of petroleum products, stabilize the Naira, and ensure rapid food provision to revitalize the economy, stimulate jobs, and restore political stability.”
The party expressed concern that the president’s silence could suggest a dangerous insensitivity to the citizens’ plight and the overall decline in the nation.
“It is alarming that President Tinubu remains silent while citizens take to the streets demanding good governance, security, and welfare—basic responsibilities of any government,” the statement read.
The PDP further highlighted that the world is observing with dismay as security agencies, allegedly affiliated with the APC, engage in violent actions against peaceful protesters, resulting in casualties among unarmed Nigerians.
The opposition party reiterated its call for a thorough investigation into these incidents and urged the president to swiftly address the nation regarding critical issues, particularly concerning the prices of petrol and food.
The PDP advocates for an effective, transparent management of resources to prevent petrol prices from exceeding N200 per litre, stressing the importance of strategic investment in gas production.
Additionally, the party urged President Tinubu to initiate efforts to recover the more than N50 trillion allegedly misappropriated by APC leaders, cut tariffs on essential goods, reduce the cost of governance, and redirect recovered funds toward initiatives enhancing the welfare of Nigerians.
The PDP concluded by advocating for a comprehensive investigation into the violence against unarmed citizens, urging security agencies to uphold professionalism in their mandate to protect the public.
