Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer recently highlighted the remarkable success of the Fallout TV series on Prime Video, noting its role in broadening the appeal of the classic Fallout game franchise. At a recent event, Spencer emphasized the importance of collaboration between Fallout executive producer Jonathan Nolan and Bethesda’s Todd Howard, which facilitated this achievement.
Spencer remarked, “It was critical early on to have that creative trust so that our game teams could both understand what they brought to the equation… but also be willing to step back and let another very talented creator take the reins in a medium that we don’t have expertise in.” He praised the series for making the “quirky” world of Fallout more accessible to a wider audience.
The Fallout TV series has garnered over 100 million viewers, making it the second-largest show on Prime Video, trailing only The Rings of Power. Plans for a second season are underway, with Macaulay Culkin recently joining the cast.
In the same interview, Spencer clarified that Microsoft does not intend to turn every franchise into a TV show or movie. The decision will hinge on finding the right creative partnerships. “We don’t have to do a television show or a movie for any of the individual properties, so it better be something that we do with someone we trust,” he stated.
In addition to the upcoming Fallout Season 2, Microsoft is also collaborating with Netflix on a Gears of War series and film, alongside a Minecraft movie set for release in 2025. Additionally, a TV adaptation based on the game Grounded is in development.
