ATTLEBORO, Mass. — A 72-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a series of intentionally set brush fires in Massachusetts. This arrest comes amid a troubling increase in blazes across the Northeast, exacerbated by dry conditions.
Law enforcement officials detained the suspect during a traffic stop on Saturday following an extensive investigation that included reviewing video surveillance footage. The incidents took place within Attleboro, the man’s hometown.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether the individual has legal representation, as he did not respond to inquiries for comment.
The suspicious fires ignited last week at several locations in Attleboro, including an Elks Lodge, a reservoir, a wastewater facility, and an animal shelter, according to police reports.
In addition to the fires leading to his arrest, the suspect is also being investigated for other related incidents in the city. A court appearance is scheduled for later Monday.
The ongoing dry autumn has contributed to escalated brush fire risks throughout much of the Northeast, including Massachusetts, raising concerns among residents and officials alike.
