Recent studies underscore the alarming health impacts of loneliness and isolation, revealing risks comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes daily or consuming six glasses of alcohol. These findings highlight a growing public health concern.
According to a report from the National Economic and Social Development Council, the number of Thais availing mental health services surged from 1.3 million in 2015 to 2.9 million in 2023. As of April 22, 2023, it was reported that 17.2% of Thais were at risk of depression, 15.5% faced high stress levels, and 10.6% were at risk of suicide.
In an effort to address the mental health challenges posed by loneliness, JitArsa Bank has partnered with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation to launch the inaugural “National Month Of Listening,” taking place from November 1 to November 30.
This initiative is inspired by the “Harvard Study of Adult Development,” which explored the ingredients for a fulfilling life, concluding that healthy relationships are crucial for happiness and well-being.
Sorrayut Ratanapojnard, co-founder of JitArsa Bank, emphasizes that the act of listening can strengthen connections and cultivate healthy relationships. “Our initiative focuses on spiritual health, one of the four key health dimensions, as a pathway to understanding oneself and fostering connections with others,” he stated.
Supporting this philosophy, a survey revealed that 25% of Thai youths favor being heard by adults over monetary rewards, indicating a strong desire for meaningful connections.
To promote the “National Month Of Listening,” over 75 activities, both online and onsite, are being offered across Bangkok and other regions. These events are categorized into Listenian Class, a workshop designed to enhance listening skills, and Listenian Space, which provides safe environments for sharing thoughts and feelings with trained volunteers.
The Listenian Class focuses on helping individuals rediscover their innate capacity to connect with others by emphasizing engagement, mindfulness, and open-mindedness during conversations.
In the Listenian Space, unique settings like Listening On The Move (an electric tuk-tuk service) and Paddle Boat Listening will create opportunities for individuals to express themselves in a supportive atmosphere. Specialized sessions cater to various demographics, including women and the LGBTQ+ community.
The response to the “National Month Of Listening” has been overwhelmingly positive, with many activities already reaching full capacity. Despite initial hurdles in urban environments where connection can be difficult, the program fosters safe spaces for individuals seeking genuine interaction.
JitArsa Bank previously introduced the Fung Srang Suk (Listening Is Happiness) initiative, a workshop aimed at cultivating deep listening without judgment, which has received acclaim from participants.
In Bangkok, where access to free supportive spaces is limited, JitArsa Bank is committed to providing a welcoming environment for those in need. Sorrayut states, “Our goal is to transform Thailand into a haven of kindness, enabling individuals to connect and support one another without charge.”
As the “National Month Of Listening” continues, numerous organizations are poised to sustain listening events beyond November, fostering ongoing connections and community engagement.
Sorrayut expressed hope that this initiative will not only enhance individual happiness but also ignite a broader movement centered around the significance of listening and human connection.
