Donkey Kong 64 holds a cherished spot in the hearts of gamers, having won numerous awards upon its release. This iconic title brought the beloved character into the 3D realm, following the beloved Donkey Kong Country series. The game’s engaging gameplay and memorable opening theme, "The DK Rap," introduced players to a colorful cast of characters.
In honor of the 25th anniversary of Donkey Kong 64, rapper Substantial and original composer Grant Kirkhope have collaborated on a remix album titled Rare Treats: Donkey Kong 64 Revisited. This album features 14 tracks, including a fresh take on "The DK Rap," complete with new beats and lyrics that maintain the classic DK feel.
"This isn’t just a nostalgia trip—it’s a full-blown, banana-fueled celebration, with re-recorded tracks and re-arrangements by Grant Kirkhope. The titles have been updated to reflect their intended themes," the official description states. Kirkhope, the original composer known for his unforgettable work on titles like Banjo-Kazooie and GoldenEye 007, has remastered the Donkey Kong 64 soundtrack.
Additionally, Kevin Bayliss, the original designer of the Donkey Kong 64 characters, created the album cover and accompanying artwork.
The DK Rap made an appearance in the blockbuster movie The Super Mario Bros. Movie last year, although Kirkhope was not credited for this use. The track has since been included in various other games, particularly as background music in several Super Smash Bros. titles, where Kirkhope has been recognized as the original composer.
