Defence Minister Sutin Klungsang has requested additional details on the offset policy related to the procurement of F-16 fighter jets from the United States, with a deadline set for August 20.
The Thai government is currently evaluating options between the Swedish-made Gripen by Saab AB and the US-designed F-16 Block 70/72 from Lockheed Martin to bolster its air force capabilities.
The air force aims to acquire four new fighter jets to gradually replace an aging fleet of F-16s slated for retirement. Initial preferences appeared to lean towards the Gripen, according to sources.
Minister Sutin emphasized that Thailand will weigh the specifics of offset arrangements before finalizing its decision, allowing the US until August 20 to furnish the necessary information.
Under the offset policy, the Thai government mandates that the armed forces consider any reciprocal benefits offered by potential suppliers as a significant factor in military procurement decisions.
This discussion followed a meeting between the US ambassador and Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin at Government House, where they also addressed collaborative efforts to combat narcotics.
Reportedly, the US delegation indicated that Washington would extend additional benefits to Thailand. Minister Sutin is scheduled to visit the US for discussions with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in mid-August.
