The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, expressed concerns on Wednesday regarding the planned hunger protests scheduled for August 1-10, warning that such demonstrations could be exploited by bandits and insurgents.
Instead of protesting, Akume urged Nigerians to engage with the government through constructive dialogue to ensure the current administration fulfills its promises.
“The government is aware of the risks associated with protests that can be compromised by criminal elements,” he stated during a briefing with journalists in Abuja.
He emphasized that protests are not the solution to the challenges being faced, which the President Bola Tinubu-led administration is actively working to resolve. “In light of recent developments, we acknowledge that Nigeria is a work in progress. The ongoing economic hardships are temporary, and relief is on the horizon,” he added.
Akume appealed to all Nigerians to prioritize peace and progress over protests against hunger, reiterating that while the government acknowledges the right to peaceful demonstrations, vigilance is essential.
He encouraged citizens to pursue collaboration and peaceful dialogue in addressing shared challenges and urged them to focus on their daily activities while remaining watchful against any actions that could disrupt the peace.
“Together, we can create a Nigeria where stability and growth are realities, not just goals, and where our collective aspirations lead to a prosperous national future,” Akume concluded.
The administration remains committed to achieving economic prosperity, viewing it as vital for lifting families out of poverty and fostering resilient societies.
“To realize this objective, peace and stability are crucial, facilitating trust, cooperation, and sustainable development,” he affirmed, noting the administration’s recognition of the urgent need for bold reforms in the economy inherited in May 2023.
He further discussed the necessity of improving the security infrastructure that has faced challenges for decades. The administration is focused on enhancing security systems and rebuilding confidence among foreign investors while striving to boost food production by ensuring the safety of communities.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate stems from the recognition that strong leadership is needed to tackle long-standing challenges, and he has laid the groundwork for both immediate and long-term prosperity for Nigerians.
