Title: Kerala Teen Survives Rare Brain-Eating Amoeba After Timely Medical Intervention
A 14-year-old boy from Kerala has defied the odds by surviving a rare brain-eating amoeba infection, a feat achieved through swift medical treatment and crucial awareness sparked by a public health campaign.
Afnan Jasim contracted the infection, believed to be from swimming in a contaminated local pond in June. The pathogen, known as Naegleria fowleri, typically enters the body through the nasal passages, leading to a severe condition called Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM), which has a staggering mortality rate of 97%.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that only eight other individuals have survived this disease globally since 1971, with diagnosis often occurring between nine hours and five days after symptom onset, emphasizing the importance of early detection.
Afnan developed severe headaches and seizures five days post-swim, prompting his parents to seek medical assistance. However, it was his father’s timely recollection of a social media post about the amoeba that led them to a definitive diagnosis.
Dr. Abdul Rauf at Baby Memorial Hospital treated Afnan after his father’s vigilant connection of the symptoms to the recent swim. The disease was diagnosed within 24 hours of his admission, which was vital for his recovery.
Dr. Rauf explained that Naegleria fowleri travels to the brain, where it releases harmful chemicals. Most fatalities occur due to increased intracranial pressure. Emphasizing prevention, he advised against jumping into warm freshwater lakes and highlighted the necessity of chlorinating water sources.
Despite six reported cases of PAM in Kerala this year, including three fatalities, Afnan’s case offers a beacon of hope. After being treated with a combination of antimicrobial drugs, including Miltefosine, he has made a remarkable recovery and will continue a course of medication.
Reflecting on his ordeal, Afnan expressed a desire to pursue a nursing degree, motivated by the dedication of healthcare professionals who cared for him during his recovery. His inspiring story underscores the critical role of health awareness and timely medical intervention in overcoming serious health challenges.
