Acclaimed composer and multi-instrumentalist Yasmin Williams has officially unveiled her upcoming album, Acadia, set to be released on October 4. This marks Williams’ debut project with the esteemed label. Alongside the announcement, she has revealed the lead single “Virga,” featuring guest vocals from an indie-folk ensemble.
Acadia features nine predominantly instrumental tracks, all written and produced by Williams herself. Demonstrating her diverse musical talents, she showcases various instruments including the guitar, banjo, calabash drum, kora, and even tap shoes. The album also includes contributions from notable musicians such as a saxophonist and vocalist.
Elaborating on the significance of Acadia, Williams shared her thoughts: “The title encompasses multiple interpretations: a sanctuary of peace and artistic expression, fertile land, and a collaborative environment where music thrives without barriers. This album represents my journey and vision for folk music—pushing boundaries and fostering cross-genre collaboration.”
Discussing the lead single “Virga,” Williams explained its metaphorical essence. “A virga is a weather phenomenon where rain evaporates before reaching the ground. This mirrors my experience as an artist in an industry that doesn’t always honor creativity. I’ve embraced the challenge of existing in this suspended state, allowing my aspirations to flourish even amidst uncertainty.”
Acadia follows Williams’ breakout 2021 album, Urban Driftwood, and continues to highlight her evolution as an innovative and impactful musician. Prepare to immerse yourself in the exploration of sound and emotion that Acadia promises to deliver.
