The Enugu State Waste Management Authority has announced the cancellation of the monthly clean-up exercise originally scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 2024. This decision comes as a result of state-wide funeral rites honoring Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the late President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
In a statement released on Friday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Water and Waste, it was confirmed that the clean-up would not take place due to the concurrent funeral activities.
“The Enugu State Waste Management Authority has cancelled the state monthly clean-up exercise, which was scheduled for Saturday, to allow for the state-wide funeral rites in honor of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu,” the statement noted.
The Authority also urged residents to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings. “We encourage Ndi Enugu to keep their environment clean and properly bag their waste before disposal, facilitating easier evacuation for waste management teams. We regret any inconvenience caused by this cancellation.”
Funeral rites for Chief Iwuanyanwu are set to begin on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, culminating in his burial on November 1, 2024. His passing was confirmed by his son, Jide, who noted that Chief Iwuanyanwu died on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at the age of 82. In September, the chairman of the Central Burial Committee announced that he would be accorded full funeral rites in a distinguished ceremony.
