ECNETNews Report: Internet Archive Faces Ongoing Disruptions
Just a day after announcing the restoration of its Wayback Machine and related services, the Internet Archive has once again gone dark. Currently, visitors to the Archive’s homepage are met with a message indicating that while Archive-It and its blog are functional, the majority of the Internet Archive’s services remain temporarily unavailable.
This marks another frustrating setback for those who depend on the digital library’s extensive resources. Details about the cause of this new disruption remain unclear, but it appears to be the fourth cyberattack on the Internet Archive since early October.
The first incident on October 9th involved two separate groups of hackers compromising the personal data of 31 million users, including emails, screen names, and encrypted passwords. Following this, subsequent attacks targeted the Archive’s support system, with hackers even responding to user support inquiries.
The timing of these incidents—coinciding with legal challenges faced by the Internet Archive from major publishing entities—intensifies concerns regarding the security and future of digital libraries. These ongoing cyberattacks add to the growing chaos surrounding the organization.
