An 88-year-old woman sustained serious injuries after an alleged assault by her grandson at their residence in Kerala’s Kannur district. The incident came to light when a home nurse reported visible injuries on the elderly woman’s body.
The police report indicates that the grandson, Riju, assaulted Karthiyayani Amma by physically restraining her and slamming her head against a wall.
This violent act is believed to have stemmed from Riju’s resentment toward his grandmother for living in their home.
Another grandson, Rahul, stated that Riju was under the influence of alcohol at the time. Initially, Riju claimed that Karthiyayani Amma had fallen in the bathroom and sustained the injuries there.
Karthiyayani Amma resides in the Kandankali locality of Payyannur Amsom, where she has been living with her daughter, Leelavathi, who is Riju’s mother, due to health concerns linked to aging. The property is owned by Leelavathi, inherited following a family partition. Authorities noted that Riju opposed his maternal grandmother’s presence in the household.
The elderly woman is currently receiving treatment for severe injuries at the nearby Pariyaram Government Medical College, with reports confirming significant injuries to her head and arms.
The Payyannur police have filed a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections concerning wrongful restraint and voluntarily causing hurt, and an investigation is underway.
