ECNETNews, August 21, 2024: Democratic delegates from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands made history last night by casting 62 votes to officially nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming general elections on November 5. Harris, the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, is poised to lead the party into this pivotal election.
During the roll call on August 20, delegates from Puerto Rico proudly supported Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, with 55 votes, highlighting their status as “the commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the next state of the United States.” The moment resonated with the lively accompaniment of the hit song “Despacito.”
Additionally, the U.S. Virgin Islands delegation contributed seven votes for Harris, backed by the vibrant anthem “VI to the Bone,” reinforcing her strong momentum toward the nomination.
This year’s Democratic National Convention featured a traditional roll call format with states and territories pledging their delegates in alphabetical order. Notably, special segments were reserved for President Joe Biden’s Delaware, Walz’s Minnesota, and Harris’ California, underscoring the significance of the evening.
The Democratic Party continues to galvanize support as delegates and party enthusiasts converge in Chicago for the convention, running from August 19-22.
