The Supreme Court has mandated the Delhi High Court Registry to submit a new progress report by the end of April concerning the pending suo moto revision petitions linked to the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots. The court observed that although these petitions have been put forward before the High Court, the previous directive to consolidate these matters has not been fulfilled.
The bench, presided over by Justice Abhay Oka, directed the registry to present the cases to the Chief Justice of India for further deliberation. The Supreme Court is set to revisit the situation on March 28.
In a prior ruling, the Supreme Court instructed the Delhi Police to submit Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) against acquittals in six riot-related cases within six weeks. The Additional Solicitor General informed the court that SLPs had already been filed in two of these cases, with plans to address six additional cases shortly.
Moreover, the Supreme Court announced the dissolution of the Dhingra Committee, established in 2018 under Justice S.N. Dhingra to investigate closed cases pertaining to the riots. The court acknowledged Justice Dhingra’s contributions while disbanding the committee.
The ongoing legal proceedings are rooted in a writ petition filed in 2016, which called for an investigation into 51 murder cases that occurred during the riots. The Supreme Court had previously instructed that SLPs be submitted to the Chief Justice for consolidation with the writ petition.
