A significant road accident occurred early Saturday morning on the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway (NH-44), leaving eighteen individuals injured, primarily commuters. The incident involved a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus that collided with a container lorry at Konavattam.
According to police reports, K. Suganth, 38, was driving to Bengaluru when he swerved to avoid hitting a cat, subsequently crashing into the roadside steel railings. This maneuver triggered a chain reaction, resulting in the container lorry and the government bus, which was trailing behind, colliding shortly after. The collision was reported around 12:45 a.m.
The bus, en route to Pernambut, sustained heavy damage, leading to severe injuries among its passengers, including both the driver and conductor. The 52-year-old bus driver, K. Dinakar, suffered fractures in both legs.
Motorists and bystanders quickly alerted local authorities, and ambulances promptly transported the injured to the Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore.
Traffic congestion ensued for approximately two hours while responders cleared the wreckage from the roadway. Law enforcement has registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.
