The Inspector-General of Police has inaugurated 169 officers of the newly established Special Intervention Squad (SIS) aimed at combating banditry, kidnapping, and other crimes across the nation.
During the graduation ceremony held at the Police Mobile Force Training College in Nasarawa State, the Inspector-General highlighted that the SIS represents a significant enhancement in the operational strategy of the police, leveraging globally recognized law enforcement practices.
The unit is designed to address critical gaps within the current police structure, providing a robust framework for rapid response and high-impact interventions. “This occasion marks a significant milestone in our unwavering quest for a safer and more secure Nigeria,” he stated, underscoring the event as a testament to the commitment to national security and the protection of Nigerian citizens.
He elaborated on the pressing need for the SIS to tackle formidable challenges such as kidnapping and banditry that have created fear in various regions of the country. The officers have undergone intensive training in various disciplines including advanced tactical operations, intelligence gathering, crisis negotiation, and community engagement.
The Inspector-General urged the graduating officers to approach their new roles with determination, integrity, and a commitment to uphold the highest standards of professional conduct. “You carry the hopes and expectations of an entire nation. Your mission transcends crime-fighting; it involves building bridges with the communities you serve,” he encouraged.
“Creating a safer Nigeria where every citizen can live and thrive free from the fear of crime is our ultimate goal. The establishment of the Special Intervention Squad is a decisive step towards achieving this vision,” he remarked.
The Commissioner of Police overseeing the SIS, noted that the seven-week training for the personnel began in Lagos State before concluding in Nasarawa.
In support of the initiative, the Minister of State for Police Affairs expressed appreciation for the ongoing efforts to enhance national safety, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity.
Nasarawa State Governor also extended a warm welcome to dignitaries, commending the establishment of the training college and reaffirming the state’s commitment to providing necessary logistics to bolster police operations in the region.
