The House of Representatives marked the International Day of the Girl Child on Thursday by hosting a special session led by 16-year-old gender advocate Ms. Isabel Anani, who took the Speaker’s seat in a historic gesture of empowerment.
The International Day of the Girl Child, celebrated annually on October 11, recognizes the challenges faced by girls globally while emphasizing their resilience and potential.
During the event, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas emphasized the importance of investing in the education and empowerment of young girls in Nigeria. He welcomed female students from public secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory, noting that their attendance highlighted the significance of this occasion.
Isabel Anani, who has been recognized for her leadership and advocacy for gender equality, presided over the session and opened with a motion titled “Commemoration of the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child.” This motion was supported by fellow members, including Kafilat Ogbara and the House spokesman, Akin Rotimi.
Isabel shared her vision for a future where every girl has the opportunity to thrive, receiving equitable education and support in various fields, including STEM and politics. She highlighted the need for accessible healthcare tailored to girls and called for a society free from discrimination that reinforces their rights.
As part of the proceedings, the House urged relevant agencies to work with schools and community organizations to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and promote a drug-free lifestyle. They also emphasized the importance of educational initiatives for out-of-school girls across Nigeria.
Additionally, the House called for an amendment to the Child’s Rights Act to enhance protection for sexually abused children and accelerate the passage of important legislation, including the Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill, dedicated to safeguarding women’s and girls’ rights.
