ECNETNews, September 5, 2024: The United States has successfully facilitated the release of 135 political prisoners detained by Nicaraguan authorities on humanitarian grounds. These individuals, who were wrongfully imprisoned for exercising their fundamental freedoms, have safely arrived in Guatemala, where they were welcomed by President Bernardo Arévalo and his administration.
Among those freed are human rights advocates, Catholic laypeople, and 13 members linked to Mountain Gateway, a religious organization from Texas. These individuals were detained for peacefully expressing their convictions, participating in assemblies, or practicing their faith. Now liberated, they face the daunting task of rebuilding their lives in a new nation, with opportunities to apply for lawful pathways to resettle in the United States or elsewhere.
The U.S. government expressed its appreciation to Guatemalan leadership for their essential support during this operation.
President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo of Nicaragua have faced significant global criticism for ongoing human rights abuses, including the clampdown on political dissent, unjustified imprisonments, and property confiscations. The international community continues to demand the unconditional release of all political prisoners in Nicaragua, urging the reinstatement of democratic freedoms for its citizens.
The United States and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken have reiterated their commitment to standing with the Nicaraguan people in their pursuit of a future free from fear and oppression.
