Culture Minister Saji Cherian highlighted the critical role of ethical journalism during a commemorative meeting on Thursday, marking the 114th anniversary of journalist Swadeshabhimani Ramakrishna Pillai’s banishment from Travancore due to his journalistic endeavors.
The event, organized by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club, saw journalists and community members paying their respects at the Swadeshabhimani statue in Palayam with floral tributes.
Mr. Cherian expressed concern over certain media outlets spreading misinformation and emphasized the need for the press to take responsibility for any errors. “It is essential for media to correct inaccuracies and uphold ethical standards,” he stated.
He reaffirmed that the journalistic values championed by Ramakrishna Pillai are increasingly relevant in today’s media environment.
The meeting featured remarks from prominent figures including former Speaker M. Vijayakumar, former MP Pannian Ravindran, BJP State spokesperson J.R. Padmakumar, and Kerala Union of Working Journalists State president-elect K.P. Reji, among others.
Press Club president P.R. Praveen led the proceedings, with contributions from Secretary M. Radhakrishnan and Treasurer V. Vineesh.
