The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has strongly countered former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent comments, asserting that the 10th House of Representatives operates under a different paradigm than during Obasanjo’s tenure.
In a statement made in Abuja, Agbese addressed Obasanjo’s assertion that it is unethical for the legislative body to set its own salaries and allowances. Obasanjo emphasized that the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Responsibility Commission should dictate such financial matters.
Agbese stated, “The former president is mistaken; the 10th House is not a reflection of his era.” He criticized Obasanjo for drawing comparisons from the past to evaluate the present, labeling such judgments as misguided and unjustified.
He highlighted the current Parliament’s commitment to accountability and transparency under the leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abass. Agbese commented, “While I acknowledge Obasanjo’s perspective, it is important to recognize the progress made since his time.” He further noted that numerous stories reflect Obasanjo’s difficulties with the National Assembly, asserting that the current representatives are dedicated to serving the needs of the populace.
The Deputy Spokesperson emphasized, “Under Speaker Abass, our mission is to represent the interests of the people, moving beyond narrow personal agendas.” On claims regarding financial allocations to members of the National Assembly, Agbese affirmed that no such transactions have occurred during President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He remarked on the distinct nature of Tinubu’s presidency, emphasizing cooperation and consensus. Agbese urged Obasanjo to redirect his focus to traditional media, stating, “We are committed to supporting Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the nation’s advancement.”
In commendation of Speaker Abass, Agbese praised his ethical leadership and commitment to excellence, highlighting that Abbas is earnest in his duties. He asserted that leadership today reflects integrity and due process, differing significantly from Obasanjo’s attempts to manipulate the National Assembly during his presidency.
Agbese concluded by asserting that today’s legislative leaders, unlike those in Obasanjo’s era, focus on collaborative governance without undue interference, propelling the nation towards positive change.
