Perfume Genius: Glory [Matador]
Following the experimental compositions of last year’s Ugly Season, Mike Hadreas shifts back to a traditional singer-songwriter approach in his seventh studio album as Perfume Genius. The lead singles “It’s a Mirror” and the duet with Aldous Harding, “No Front Teeth,” may suggest an energetic album, yet Glory stands as Hadreas’ most introspective and reserved record in over a decade. Nonetheless, he and co-producer Blake Mills create exquisite moments, evidenced by the heartfelt track “Me & Angel”—possibly a nod to Celine Dion—and the vibrant closing number “In a Row,” which could rival his hit “Queen” as the ultimate concert finale.
