No fewer than 10 federal ministries and agencies are set to receive over N1 trillion each in the 2025 budget, as revealed by an analysis of the proposed allocations in the 2025 Appropriation Bill presented to the National Assembly.
Key ministries benefiting from this substantial funding include Police Affairs, Interior, Defence, Finance, Power, Works, and Budget and Economic Planning, along with the ministries of Niger Delta, Education, and Health.
The Finance Ministry is poised to receive the largest allocation, amounting to N17.52 trillion. A significant portion of this funding is earmarked for salary payments, marking an increase of 87.78 percent, or N8.19 trillion, compared to the N9.33 trillion allocated in 2023.
Following closely is the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, which will see its allocation rise by N2.33 trillion or 52.35 percent to a total of N6.78 trillion for the 2025 budget.
The Ministry of Defence ranks third with an appropriation of N2.92 trillion, reflecting an increase of N1.34 trillion or 84.81 percent. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior is set to receive N1.13 trillion, a notable rise from N461 billion in 2024.
The Ministry of Power will also experience a dramatic increase of 510.46 percent, receiving N2.1 trillion, up from N344 billion in 2024. The Ministry of Works is proposed to receive N1.14 trillion, an increase from N657.23 billion.
Additionally, the Niger Delta Ministry is allocated N2.23 trillion, Education N2.52 trillion, and Health N1.91 trillion.
The Senate and the House of Representatives recently passed the N49.7 trillion ‘Restoration’ 2025 budget for a second reading, following its presentation by President Bola Tinubu.
The budget, which received commendations from lawmakers for its intent to strengthen the nation’s economy, subsequently proceeded to the Committee on Appropriations.
The budget includes a revenue projection of N34.82 trillion to support the total expenditure of N47.9 trillion, resulting in a projected deficit of N13 trillion.
